International Day of Friendship

The International Day of Friendship is celebrated each year on July 30th. This day was established in 2011 by the United Nations General Assembly as a way to promote peace and friendship around the world. The day provides an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and celebrate their shared humanity.

There are many ways to celebrate the International Day of Friendship, including hosting events, participating in online campaigns, and simply spending time with friends and loved ones.

No matter how you choose to celebrate, the important thing is that we all take a moment to appreciate the power of friendship.

Friendship is a synonym for love, and even if your closest loved ones will not put up with your 3 a.m. emotional outbursts, your best friend will.

When we can’t see the bright side, our friends sit in the dark with us, seeing the anguish in our eyes while the rest of the world believes our smiles.

While you might be wild with your best friend, they are also the ones who understand you without needing to speak to you, which is why friends are the biggest gift of life. Friendship Day is observed with great joy all around the world to honor these friends who will always love you—they flawed you, they confused you, or they misguided you.

The United Nations General Assembly has declared July 30 to be the International Day of Friendship.

The History of the International Day of Friendship

The idea for the day came from one of the United Nations’ key principles, which is that “friendship between peoples is one of the fundamental pillars of international peace and security.”

Joyce Hall suggested Friendship Day for the first time in Paraguay in 1958. It was a festival dedicated to the celebration of friendships around the world. The intended date of celebration was 2 August, but due to de-synchronization in the United States, it was rescheduled to 7 August. Nane Annan, the wife of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, selected Winnie the Pooh as the world’s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations on Friendship Day in 1998. The conference was co-hosted by Kathy Lee Gifford and co-sponsored by the United Nations Department of Public Information and Disney Enterprises.

Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho introduced the idea of a Global Friendship Day during a meal with friends in Puerto Pinasco, a village on the Paraguay River about 200 miles north of Asuncion, Paraguay, on July 20, 1958. The World Friendship Crusade was established during that summit. The World Friendship Crusade is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting friendship and cooperation among people of all races, colors, and religions. Since that day, the 30th of July has been fervently honored in Paraguay as Friendship Day every year and has been embraced by many other countries.

For several years, the World Friendship Crusade lobbied the United Nations to recognize 30 July as World Friendship Day, and in 2011, the United Nations General Assembly decided to designate 30 July as the International Day of Friendship and to invite all Member States to recognize the International Day of Friendship in compliance with their local, national, and regional cultures and customs, including through education.

The importance of the International Day of Friendship

The International Day of Friendship is important because it reminds us of the power of friendship. Friendship is one of the most fundamental pillars of international peace and security, and this day provides an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and celebrate our shared humanity. On this day, we can take a moment to appreciate the friends in our lives and make an effort to connect with someone new. By doing so, we can help build a more peaceful and tolerant world.

According to the United Nations, the UN General Assembly declared July 30 as International Day of Friendship, to inspire peace initiatives and bridge gaps between communities via friendship between peoples, states, traditions, and individuals. As future leaders, young people should be involved in community activities that integrate other cultures and encourage international awareness and respect for diversity.

People all over the world, however, use the day to commemorate the best friend journey from strangers in an academic institute to colleagues in our offices. We have gone from being inseparable at work to nurturing intimate friendships with people we can chat with for hours on end without hesitating and knowing they have got our backs and vice versa. Although it is not a national holiday, people all over the world gather with their friends to toast one another’s health and many more years together.

International Friendship Day Traditions

Many such friends, who are there for us, call us out on our indecisiveness; surrender their time for us when everybody else is busy with their lives. They show right in the middle of the night to lighten our mood, and even our long-distance friends whose friendship has endured across boundaries are honored on International Day of Friendship.

Friendship has diverse meanings for diverse persons and the kind of friendship varies as well. People we have known for a long time may not be close to us, yet we may regard someone we have just known for a short time to be our best friend. This is why everyone’s customs and celebrations are unique. There are simple ways to commemorate the day, such as simply hanging out with friends and doing our “thing,” as well as more complicated methods, such as throwing parties, sharing gifts, and expressing our gratitude. Another popular habit on International Friendship Day is to contact and reconnect with friends with whom we haven’t communicated in a long time.

Other ideas are:

Let Them Know You Care By Giving Them A Call

It could have been months or years since you last spoke to a friend who doesn’t live close by. On International Friendship Day, listening to a very familiar voice is a great way to brighten each other’s day. It may be hard for some to call out of the blue, but the awkwardness will dissipate as soon as they hear the first laughs. It is not going to hurt to remind someone that you remember them.

Send Thoughtful Messages And Notes

Let them know how much you care by writing on a card, postcard, or sticky note. Allow them to reminisce about some of your favorite times together. If writing letters feels a little out of date, you can upload your message on social media and let the entire world know how important these people are in your life.

Give Them ROSES

Giving roses to your friends is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give them. They are ageless, symbolic, and adaptable. For International Friendship Day, here are some of the nicest roses you can present or send by having them delivered!

  • Gift Box with White Cream Roses
  • Gift Box with Yellow Roses
  • Gift Box with Pastel Pink Roses

Send them a care package

Do something more considerate than sending your friend a pretty necklace. You can create a self-care package for your friends that are unique to them. For example, you can put together a package with nail paints, sheet masks, scented candles, and their favorite processed foods (it is a no-judgment zone), wrap it up, add a message, and have it delivered to them.

Send them a video as a surprise

If you feel like doing something emotional, get out some throwback photos of yourself and your friends. Choose their favorite song or a song about friendship and turn these photos into a moving film. It will take some effort, but it will be worth it when they react.
