Buy Nothing Day is an annual event that was created to encourage people to think twice about their consumer habits. It takes place on the Friday after Thanksgiving, which is known as Black Friday in the United States. On Buy Nothing Day, participants are encouraged to avoid making any purchases, whether it be in-person or online. Instead, they are urged to spend time with family and friends, or engage in activities that don’t involve spending money. While Buy Nothing Day may seem like a pointless exercise to some, it can actually be a powerful way to challenge our consumer culture. By taking a day to simply sit with our thoughts and refrain from buying anything, we can begin to question why we feel the need to constantly consume. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll start to see that we don’t need nearly as much stuff as we thought we did.
