The Umhlanga Reed Dance Day is a national holiday in eSwatini (formerly known as Swaziland). It is the largest cultural festival in the Kingdom and takes place during the end of August or the beginning of September, depending on the year. During this week-long celebration, tens of thousands of unmarried girls and young women come together to cut reeds for annual repairs to the windbreaks of the Queen Mother’s royal residence.
