National Drinking Straw Day
National Drinking Straw Day! A day to celebrate a simple invention that has made drinking much easier (and cleaner!) for all of us. Whether you’re sipping a cold beverage on a hot day or enjoying a smoothie for breakfast, straws make it easy and fun to drink. So today, take some time to enjoy your favorite drink with a straw and celebrate this fun little invention!
Do you know what England patent number 9633 and US patent number US375962 A have in common? It might surprise you but this is the patent for the straw.
On the 3rd of January 1888, The United States Patent Office granted Mavin G. Stone, his Patent # US375962 A which is an improvement on artificial straws.
Today, straws come in different shapes and sizes and can be made from different materials such as paper, bamboo, metal, and even glass.
In the United States alone, 500 million straws are used every day!
While most of us take straws for granted, there are some people who can’t use them. People with a disability called dyspraxia have trouble with coordination and coordination. For them, drinking from a straw can be very difficult.
There are also some cultures that don’t use straws. In Japan, for example, it is considered impolite to drink directly from a bottle or can. Instead, people pour the drink into a cup and then drink from the cup.
Drinking Straw and its History
Drinking straw or a sipping tube is a thin pipe of plastic or paper that is used to suck up liquids. It was invented by Marvin Stone in 1888
Stone was born in Kentucky in 1866. He started his career as a tobacco puffer but later moved on to working with paper. In 1888, he patented the first drinking straw. His straw was made out of paper and looked a lot like the ones we use today.
The original straws were hand-rolled and glued together. Stone’s company, Stone Manufacturing, was the first to mass-produce straws.
During World War II, plastic became the material of choice for drinking straws. Plastic straws were first used in hospitals because they were sterile and didn’t break like glass straws.
Today, there are many different types of straws available. You can buy metal straws, bamboo straws, and even reusable plastic straws.
There are many reasons to celebrate National Drinking Straw Day. For one, drinking straws are a part of American history. They were invented by Americans, and they have been used by Americans for over 100 years.
Well, we can go back further in time like 2000 BC
The Sumerians were the first people to use drinking straws 3,000 years ago! They would have used them for beer and avoided solid byproducts of fermentation that dipped at the bottom. The oldest known example was found in an ancient Egyptian tomb dated around 2750 Bce; it’s made out of gold tubes intricately carved with precious blue stone- Sapphire to be exact (which is also one of our favorite stones).
Reasons to celebrate National Drinking Straw Day
Another reason to celebrate National Drinking Straw Day is to raise awareness about the importance of recycling. Straws are made from plastic, which is a material that can take hundreds of years to decompose.
If everyone recycled their straws, we could reduce the amount of plastic in landfills and oceans. So celebrate National Drinking Straw Day by recycling your straws!
You can also celebrate National Drinking Straw Day by using reusable straws. Reusable straws are made from materials like metal or bamboo. They can be used over and over again, which reduces the need for disposable straws.
Straws in the EU
National Drinking Straw Day is indeed national because the EU does not like them. Reading the article “EU restrictions on certain single-use plastics“, then it is clear that since the 3rd of July 2021 plastic straws are forbidden.
And perhaps that is a good thing, there is already a lot of stress on our environment and plastic straws do not really help.
My participation in National Drinking Straw Day
I will celebrate National Drinking Straw Day by using a reusable straw. I have a metal straw that I use at home and I love it! It’s easy to clean and I don’t have to worry about it ending up in a landfill.
If you have a straw, preferably a reusable straw then use it on the 3rd of January.
